At St. Lawrence University, I was an African Studies minor. For my senior independent study, I created a project on South African poetry. During my time studying abroad in South Africa, Fall 2012, I conducted interviews with three local poets, attended poetry readings and slams, began my research, and started to write my own poetry based on that research, my experiences, the stories of friends, and my impressions of the country and its peoples. This writing and research continued into my final semester at St. Lawrence, and resulted in my South African Poetry Project (From Black and White to the Colors Between: The Transformation of South African Poetry). The poems here are from this project – some of the 33 I wrote.
