A Certain Salvation
by Chris Biles
I’ve known you for a long time
and told you long ago
you have to hold steady, keep to the road ahead.
I know right now you are in the arms of the ocean,
with no place to rest your head.
I know right now you are asking over and over again
why the reflections still look the same
from the other side of the water.
I know right now the white waves are crashing above you,
your Heaven is crashing, but please
don’t tumble with those waves.
Don’t go up
Hold steady. Keep to the road ahead.
But I know you know right now that you’ll break down
up ahead, because it’s neither up nor down.
I know you know right now that your Heaven is above,
that rising up to take the tumble over and over again
is the only way to keep from the darkest depths of this ocean
– where the arms don’t let go
everywhere a place to rest your head.
I know you know right now that holding steady
is not an option, because the only “ahead” that exists
is one that lacks the light in your eyes.
tumble, tumble with the waves,
because that, as we both know right now,
is the only road to your salvation.
